Abbot’s Commentary: Karma is Power

by | Mar 26, 2024 | Buddhism for All

Karma is power. You have power because your actions have consequences. You have the power to change the world, and you have the power to change your life. You use this power at all times. Even if you decide not to use it, that very decision is an exercise of your power, with consequences that cannot be avoided.

This is not about self-blame or self-exaltation. This is about accepting the precious nature of this moment, of this decision, right now, as the beginning of the future. Whatever you do now will have consequences that will impact your future choices, and this will continue all the way to your complete enlightenment.

Therefore, if you believe in anything, believe in this: “What you do matters.”

  • Reflect on this post with Angela: You have power because of choice. Inaction is also a choice. Your present thoughts, words, deeds, will determine your future. If your thoughts, words, deeds are motivated by greed, anger or delusion, then it will result in your experience of suffering. If you practice right thoughts, right speech and right action, then you are cultivating your mind and walking the path to awakening to the deathless. What you do today matters. What changes (however tiny) are you inspired to make in your life?
