Imagine a man holding onto a chain attached to a stake in the ground. He has been circling around that stake for years, walking thousands of miles without going anywhere. There is an end to his imprisonment, which will enable him to live a better life: he must let go of that chain.
In the same way, there is an end to suffering, which gives us happier and more meaningful lives: we must let go of the causes of suffering.
The third noble truth says, “You can do it.” It proclaims cessation as a truth: the cessation of suffering, which is the complete abandoning of craving. It is the end of greed, hatred and ignorance. This is the realization of nirvana.
Nirvana is the relinquishment of everything. It is the supreme joy. It is the supreme peace. It is clear and quick and bright. It is the supreme goal. Achieve this goal and offer your true life to the world.
